The Threat to National Security

On Tuesday of this week Mrs. Obama said that Obesity is a threat to national security citing that “obesity is now one of the most common disqualifiers for military service” (, First Lady Links Childhood Obesity to National Security in Launch of ‘Let’s Move’ Campaign, February 09, 2010).

According to the Patriot Act, enacted by the congress under Bush, anything could be deemed as a national security threat if the government felt like it.  Now obesity is that threat!  Lets lock it up at Guantanamo and throw away the key.  Forget due process of law and forget that we aren’t legally at war with it.  Forget even that it is unjust to go after individuals simply because they eat too much.  Let us allow congress to allow the President the use of force and “declare” a war on obesity.  Let the military do whatever it takes and at all costs to protect the national interests of this country.  Send in the troops to take out obesity without an arrest warrant.  We understand that innocent people may die, but that is after all the cost of a “war.”  We are willing to let that happen for the greater good.  The greater good is what national security is all about.

Obesity as Mrs. Obama puts it ranks right up there with terrorism.  You see terrorists aim to repel the infidel from their holy lands, but that is a threat to our national security.  For some reason we need to be over in their countries promoting democracy here and there at gunpoint and also funneling large amounts of cash to military dictatorships.  Now, if we let obesity prevent individuals from becoming soldiers we have fewer soldiers.  If we have fewer soldiers we can’t wage wars in foreign lands for no reason at all except “national security,” which is whatever the government feels like and somehow persuades us to believe via the media.  So obesity must die!

Now, if I persuade potential recruits that the war is unjust and unconstitutional and they decide not to join a military, that will send them overseas and force them to betray the oath to protect and uphold the constitution that they must make, does that make me a threat to national security?  According to the government’s logic- and Mrs. Obama is merely a spokesperson of this government, I must be a threat.  Where will it all stop?  There is no end in sight to the threat to individual liberties if it is the government that decides arbitrarily what national security is.  If the people are taken out of the equation then the government becomes a threat to national security because there is no accountability. Sadly, much of our current problem goes back to President Abraham Lincoln, who by the way died by the sword after he created the federal government we all know and love for the “greater good.”
