Calling for a Transparent Government

“The very word ‘secrecy’ is repugnant in a free and open society; and we are as a people inherently and historically opposed to secret societies, to secret oaths, and to secret proceedings.” -John F. Kennedy, America’s last real President.

The Julian Assange issue boggles my mind in this freest of nations.  Without thinking about it the nation has taken the side of the government and agreed that the government should have secrets while Wikileaks should be shutdown.  Thanks to Glenn Beck, O’Reilly, and all the rest of the government propaganda talking pieces and thanks to your inability to read the Constitution and turn off your tv this has taken place.

It is inconsistent for any freedom loving individual to take the side of the government on this issue.  Our government, stepping outside the bounds of its legal rights and acting unconstitutionally, is in the moral wrong on almost every issue.  Julian Assange is no hero and he may not even me a nice person, but the issue boils down to the moral obligation of every state’s citizens to demand government transparency and to stop abdicating their rights in the name of security, which obviously has not protected us one bit.

Historically, did the government’s secrets protect us from international criminals on 9/11?  Did the government’s secrets protect us from another nation at Pearl Harbor?  I ask you why is it necessary to believe that only a few elite can protect us with their secrets?

Only you can protect our nation.  Only an informed population can hold its government accountable to protect its individuals and its borders.  Only an informed population can demand that its representatives abide by the Constitution or be impeached.
