“I Gave My Life to Christ”

No you didn’t.

You gave your social discourse to Christ. You promised not to say any bad words, you promised not to watch naughty movies, you promised to never get another tatoo, you promised to always vote Republican, you promised to give 10% of your income to a local church building, you promised to support the troops.

Did I miss anything?

The issue with Christians is that we do not understand what a high calling we have.

You gave your life to Christ?  No.  You simply gave some of the issues to Christ. That is not good enough!

Our heavenly Father wants the whole thing!  He wants us to be renewed inwardly and outwardly and by His mercies He can show us how by the revealing of His Word through the Holy Spirit.

Romans 12 says “by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.  And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

How then can we give only some of the issues we are daily bombarded with to God?  How is it that we can go out from church on Sundays and deny the One, who has created us, by our lifestyles.  “That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable” as DC Talk put it way back when in their album Jesus Freak.

How is it that Americhristianity can go out and think that the political realm is somehow separate from the bible?  That voting for George Bush and only Republican Party members is the biblical thing to do?

How is it that we as Americhristians think that illegal wars and unjust wars are ok to support because they punish evil men like Saddam Hussein?

How is it that we as Americhristians think that the death penalty isn’t a strong enough deterent to murderers even though putting to death a convicted murderer deters him from ever committing the crime again and values life?

How is it that we have been convinced to give 10% of our income to a church building cause and know we’ll see tax deductions for our government return?  Let not your right hand know what the left hand is doing when you give to the poor. How have we come so far as to give money to an air conditioned and comfortable building project and think its the “work of God” ?

How is it that we get our awareness, news, and political commentary from the likes of secular sources like Sean Hannity and not Scripture?

How is it that we Americhristians call abortion the most pressing issue in America today, politically, and yet abort countless thousands in our own homes in the name of family planning?  Infact, we put our own selfish desires, needs, wants, and fears in front of pro-creation.  We are so far anti-children as Christians that we cannot even call what we think of family as biblical.  Jesus said that if you even look at a woman with lust in your heart you have committed the very act of adultery.  If you have decided to place your career or “We’re not ready yet” in front of God’s ordinance from the beginning to be fruitful and multiply you are no less a murderer than the woman who has decided to abort the infant inside of her.  If there is no difference in the heart on the issue then what difference is there in the outcome?  Your “family” looks no different than the world’s.   How can you rationalize it away as “Oh, well I wouldn’t go as far as to abort my baby” when you have already done it in your heart and have hindered what God has called good.  Children are a blessing from the LORD not a burden!  Sterility is far from desirable from a biblical standpoint and yet how have we as Americhristians allowed the issue of family planning to infiltrate our lifestyle?

How is it that we send our children off to atheist institutes like public school?

How is it that we think our “christian” schools are somehow better than public schools when they are modeled after secular institutions and have simply replaced Evolution with Creation in our biology books? We’re really going to raise up scholars to the LORD this way?

How is it that we teach our children that success is a career choice?  How is it that we place such a high emphasis on the education our children receive and that we don’t have time for ourselves?  How is it that we will give our children to be taught be strangers and then spend on average five minutes with them ourselves?  That is not what Deuteronomy 6 demands of parents!

How is it that Americhristianity believes homosexuality is wrong and a sin according to the bible and yet finds it acceptable and funny to make gay jokes (lisp talking)?  Why don’t we make some funny jokes about adultery or pornography?  Not very funny any more is it?  The very people we are called to be salt and light to we despise and make fun of.

How is it that we deamonize the true patriots of this land, who have placed biblical conviction in front of mass movements?  We call people that have such beliefs as misguided or neutral and say that such views can only allow for evil men to prosper.  No!  It is when true biblically guided people do nothing that evil prospers.  “Good people” can only do more harm when they think they are stopping evil in the world by supporting people like George W. Bush or godless conservative movements like the Tea Party, which have no interest in glorifying God in their means or in their ends.

How is it that church has evolved to mean Sunday morning torture in the pews?  Church is not a place.  Church is not what we do on Sunday morning.  Church is you!  Church is the called out ones.  Church is ekklēsia!  Church is 60 seconds, 60 minutes, 60 hours, 24/7, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year, 120 years of our life, every moment seen and not seen in our thought life, our all in all on every issue the Bible talks about and it talks about all things and everything wholly and completely!

How is it that we can call ourselves Christians or say things like “I gave my life to Christ” when we don’t really mean it?

  1. “How is it that we have been convinced to give 10% of our income to a church building…”
    – Scripture convinced me to do so.

“How have we come so far as to give money to an air conditioned and comfortable building project and think its the “work of God”?”
    – Who are we to judge what is and isn’t the work of God?

“If you have decided to place your career or “We’re not ready yet” in front of God’s ordinance from the beginning to be fruitful and multiply you are no less a murderer than the woman who has decided to abort the infant inside of her.”
    – A Pastor at Cov. Pres. put it well in pre-marital class when he said, “My wife and I had as many children as we could effectively minister to.” I agree completely with his perspective on parenting. Children are a blessing but we are not mindless animals that should keep having children until it kills us or them. How effective is a teacher in a classroom of 100 students vs 20? How close can you be to 10 children while working fulltime vs 2-3? How healthy is your wife to be able to go through multiple pregnancies? Every situation is different and God doesn’t command us to get pregnant every chance we get. God has designed some parents for many children and some for few.

“How is it that we send our children off to atheist institutes like public school?”
    – Whether public or private you’ll never fully protect your child from our secular culture. But I think education is very important and that it is a form a admiring God’s creation. Non-christians teachers can help your children learn too. They may teach in awe of their own intelligence rather than in awe of the creator, but that doesn’t mean they don’t know what they’re talking about.

“How is it that church has evolved to mean Sunday morning torture in the pews?”
    – What Church have you been going to?

“Church is not a place…. Church is you!”
    – Church IS a place where the BODY of believers meet to worship their Savior and God. One body with many part. You are a part not the whole thing. A Church is where fellowship, accountability, teaching, and worship all come together. Your personal walk with Christ is the 24/7 you speak of.

    • Response in the order you posted:

Scripture says give to the poor not a building project.. just saying.

If you cannot effectively minister to 10 children then God will not give you that many. A man will never be yoked beyond what he is able. It is foolishness to hinder what God has called good for the reasons the world aborts children. There are some in the pro-creation camp, who argue that you must seize every opportunity. I think like Rachel in the old testament that is turning your womb into an idol. Rachel eventually died in childbirth after she demanded Jacob give her a child. Coincidence? The opposite is just as true- control becomes your idol. Onan was struck dead in Genesis for what? Abstaining from sex? No, for spilling his seed. What about Matthew 19:12? What is that saying about becoming a eunuch? How can you be “pro-life” and practice family planning?

If you really want to subject your children to the public school system that is your call. I’m not telling you don’t. I’m just saying what does Deuteronomy 6 say about parents and parenting?

You know there have been mornings when it has been a struggle to go to church and get the kids ready, etc. What a chore. That’s what I mean.. not that there is nothing to learn from a pastor. What is a biblical model for Sunday mornings though?

Church is not a place. That is not the definition of the word meaning church “ekklēsia.”

      • A building project designed to minister to the children of the church body. Hardly a simple investment in brick and mortar as you referred to it.

If God will not allow a couple, fully capable of reproducing, to make babies due to his will then how would simple contraception stop a pregnancy from happening?

Sunday morning is a opportunity for a man to lead and prepare his family for Church.

The Church was also used to refer to all believers. So every church is Harrisonburg could be included in this definition. I am speaking of my church, who’s body gathers on Mosby road.

      • How is it possible that men murder each other with simple bullets? If God really wanted to protect the innocent then he would divert the bullet by that logic.

Why not point a gun at a person and trust that God will intervene? The action itself, the motive behind the action, hindering what God has called good– man, that’s what is happening when we practice family planning.

I’m not disagreeing that Sunday morning is an opportunity for a man to lead. I think it is a great opportunity! But not the only opportunity.

  2. Consider the words of John Calvin from his commentary on Genesis:

“The voluntary spilling of semen outside of intercourse between man and woman is a monstrous thing. Deliberately to withdraw from coitus in order that semen may fall on the ground is doubly monstrous. For this is to extinguish the hope of the race and to kill before he is born the hoped-for offspring. This impiety is especially condemned, now by the Spirit through Moses’ mouth, that Onan, as it were, by a violent abortion, no less cruelly than filthily cast upon the ground the offspring of his brother, torn from the maternal womb. Besides, in this way he tried, as far as he was able, to wipe out a part of the human race. If any woman ejects a foetus from her womb by drugs, it is reckoned a crime incapable of expiation and deservedly Onan incurred upon himself the same kind of punishment, infecting the earth by his semen, in order that Tamar might not conceive a future human being as an inhabitant of the earth.”
